Bioshock 2 Initial Thoughts

2 Comments 02 October 2010

Whichever person on the staff of 2K Marin that decided  on not including an inverted y-axis option for gameplay should be punched in the balls.  As a corollary, the rest of the staff that bought into this idea should be have their faces downgraded with a shovel.  Seriously, did Rocksteady devs loan out their team to 2K Marin on this one to subversively fuck up the gameplay?

Bioshock 2 displays excellent graphics and even better attention to detail.  The little things are not overlooked, such as which items are seamlessly fading into the background, and which collectible items attract attention in the foreground.  I’m even willing to stick it out to hear how the story ends, because the ambient music really does a good job at keeping you at a safe enough distance to not encourage comfortability, but at the same time immersing you in the world of Rapture: an underwater clusterfucktopia.

Also, remember Cloud’s Buster Sword from the beginning of Final Fantasy VII?  When looking at the game case as a teenager, I remember asking my good friend who recommended me the game, “When do I get that thing!?”  Well, Big Daddy, your playable character, starts off with a drill bit for a right hand.  Talk about a stress releaser.  Just gather some drill fuel and go to town on someone’s head after you have electrocuted them and stunned them.  It may rank up there with the original Halo sticky grenade during furious capture the flag moments: damn near cathartic.

We play games to play the games.  Modern gaming seems to be pushing for graphics and story over actual gameplay.  I opt to take Borderlands gameplay over Bioshock 2′s and Batman: Arkham Asylum’s graphics and story any day of the week and twice on Sunday.  But this game is not over yet.  I’ll give it another honest shot tomorrow.

You start as a Big Daddy in the second one? Those things freaked the hell outta me in the first one.

Maybe I should finish it; that would probably explain why you can play as one in the sequel.

Oh don’t worry. You’ll still run out of ammo and mobs will run out of doors you thought were locked. So it’s not like it’s gives you any advantage. Or logic for that matter.
