Why Video Games Cost $60

4 Comments 23 May 2011

The recent surge in facial recognition technology hasn’t affected the price of video games in the least. Neither has the fact that we haven’t seen a new console release since 2005. So why are we still handing over $60 for a mint game? Well, for a couple reasons.

Wii 2: Hopes and Fears

4 Comments 18 April 2011

Glitchoris loves telling you what’s up.  Like the time five years ago when we posted about a short-lived energy drink called “Sum Poosie.” We never drank any of it, but then again it didn’t come with a clearance label from the CDC.

This time, however, it’s about the supposed next-gen Wii.  Nintendo is leaking information to the press at the rate that would make B. Arthur’s morning routine look fast and furious.   Continue Reading

This Is What Happens When People Drop The Ball: Glitch Review: Black Ops

19 Comments 23 January 2011

Notice the ominous word Glitch before the titular word Review.  Titular is a conjugation of the word title you sycophantic opportunists.

So I load up Call of Duty: Black Ops for m’360, play the first thirty minutes, then realize this jackass that I’m supposed to be protecting will not move forward.  He just kind of stands there.  So I blow some more people up.  Still nothing.  Then I just backtrack and kill everything that moves (including the prison inmates fighting with me).  Nada. Review: NBA Jam

1 Comment 06 December 2010

A short review for a small-impact game.

Glitchoris BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front)

Could have been a fun game.  Should have been a fun game.  But…it’s just not a fun game.  NBA Jam just does not evolve from its predecessors.  Its like if The Legend of Zelda 2 came out for the NES, and instead of side scrolling, it was a third quest for the first game.  Don’t spend time on it, and for the love of everything that is right and holy about video games, don’t buy it.

The Glamor And Glitz

Like a mildly attractive girl on her best day, NBA Jam falls short when compared to the games on the market right now.  Sure, it’s fun for about the first five minutes, then you wonder when it gets fun.  Well…it really doesn’t.  Swatting a ball to half court and shoving a player in the air fifteen feet is fun for awhile, but the fun does not last very long.

Just watch the trailer.  The trailer will bring back fond memories of ’96.

…And there you have it.  Really, that’s the entire game.

NBA Jam Mid-Game Thoughts

No Comments 04 December 2010

Taking off from just inside the three-point line, grabbing twenty feet of air, and hammering down a near backboard breaking slam dunk is as fun now as it was sixteen years ago with NBA Jam’s inception.  Conversely, air balling a three pointer from the top of the key while on fire is equivocally dumb. NBA Jam Initial Thoughts

1 Comment 02 December 2010

We at Glitchoris tend to pass on sports games.  Obviously.  But when I saw NBA Jam up for release, I could not pass up the opportunity.  Only so many video games have directly influenced modern media, and this resurrection of the original NBA Jam deserves our attention.

*Disclaimer: Glitchoris does not deem NBA Jam a good game. Continue Reading

Everybody Wants An Extra Life

No Comments 30 June 2010

The title beckons escapism. To Tom Bissell, an extra life is a double, or even triple identity; not a life that begins when the first one ends.  Is it possible to live vicariously through an Eastern immigrant venturing the streets of Liberty City?  Can we share in the horror of sending a barely twenty-something femme fatale through a deserted town of zombies?  It’s absolutely possible to share in the emotions.  In fact, sometimes we become so attached to characters that we cannot associate with lesser characters.  Feel like real life at the office?  It should.  That’s the idea Tom Bissell’s Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter hints towards the fascinating idea that not only does the video gaming industry possess a critical framework: it’s staring us in the face.  Only it’s staring us in the face a way a nightmarish dream won’t let you run as fast as you want to.  We know what we want to do; we just can’t do it yet.
