FTW: What Does it Really Mean?

1 Comment 12 July 2010

For the Win.  That’s what FTW means, if you go for the straight translation.  But do you know what it really means?  If you have no idea what the included photo is in reference to, then I can guarantee that you don’t know what FTW really means, because you’re probably way too young.  The Last of the Mohicans, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, arrived in theaters in 1992, when the majority of you were still probably swimming around in your daddy’s testicals.  Daniel Day-Lewis knows exactly what FTW means, because he lived it by going on a fucking Medal of Honor run at the end of the film that will never be forgotten.  FTW not only means winning emphatically, but on an EPIC stage.  In video games there aren’t too many instances, at least in single player mode, that I can think of.  Multiplayer is a different story of course, as when you’re playing with friends or online you’ll have countless opportunities to really win in epic fashion – sports games included.  So which single player campaigns truly offer FTW moments?  Double tap the link below to find out, and to add your own.

Goldeneye 007, N64 – Control Mission

Arguably the hardest mission in this epic first-person-shooter, you take control of Bond as you desperately try to protect Natalya as she cracks the satellite, with countless Russian soldiers coming at you from 360 degrees.  If you somehow manage to make it past that, you’re faced with a no-shit, Last of the Mohicans run towards an elevator, past dozens more guards, and usually very little health and tattered body armor.  If you’re good enough to make it this far, you’re usually forced to stand up, probably on your couch, as you make your final dash for freedom.  Sweat pours down your face as bullets whiz past you, while you slowly chant prayers to your favorite deity as you push your N64 controller’s analog stick to the breaking point.  But when you do finally reach the elevator, and the doors close, and Bond is somehow still breathing, said controller becomes airborne, beers become shotgunned, and neighbors commence to calling the police.  THAT IS FTW.  Daniel Day-Lewis approved.

That’s my FTW moment, and from someone that has played an assload of video games, I cannot say that I’ve experienced anything quite like that.

My goal here is participation, so please, the three of you that read Glitchoris regularly, let’s hear yours.
